It was a very pleasant day at Sheddocksley, kicking off in the sunshine, kicking up the considerable slope on the pitch. It was evident very early on that this was to be a much better match than opposition of late had provided. Early raids by Sheddocksley were repelled by resolute defending and we very quickly took control of the midfield. Andy Smith was dominating this area and distributing the ball to both wings with great effect. It was one of these moves which led to the first goal of the match. A great move involving Andy, Liam and Mason down the left led to a corner, and a smartly taken quick corner between Liam and Stuart, led to a good cross to the back post where Scott Duguid was unguarded and knocked it home from five yards out This spurred Dyce onto greater things and some of the slick passing movements turned defence into attack with breathtaking speed. Soon we were 2-0 up, with Mason Thompson pouncing on a rebound, from a Kevin Petrie shot. In the second period, although three changes were made, we continued to edge a very close fought battle. Sheddocksley continued to make a fight of it and most of the play was contained in their half of the pitch and on their odd attacks, Jason came quickly out of his goals and dealt with the danger. If any team was going to score at this point it was Dyce, and Matthew Calder reacted quickly inside the box and was first to the ball after the Shedd keeper spilled the ball again. Andy Smith had to come off midway through the half with a head knock which left him slightly dazed!!! In the third period, we made more changes, but within seconds of the restart, Sheddocksley had pulled one back as a mix up with the kick-off allowed them to advance straight through the middle of the defence. Jason advanced and was unlucky not to deflect the shot round the post. But Dyce dug in well and although Sheddocksley were now up for the game, it was at the other end that goals seemed most likely. A great run the length of the pitch from Scott Melville almost led to goal number four, and the Shedd keeper made a number of decent stops to defy Dyce. However Sheddocksley did scramble a second goal with only five minutes left and this could have made for a frantic finish. Resolute defending from the whole team meant that Sheddocksley were unable to threaten the Dyce goal, and time was played out uneventfully. It was a well-fought battle, against a team that was well organised and determined to mix it. I thought Dyce rose to the physical challenge well and I was very pleased that we did not resort to foul play at any point. The whole team were a credit to Dyce Boys Club
Well done boys!!!
