Westdyke Thistle 3 - 6 Dyce Boys Club FC Sunday 28th September 2008 Crombie School, Westhill There was a chill in the air as the teams assembled for this early kick-off, though conditions were perfect. Ben Soutar was in the squad today, bringing his composed defending to the back line for this game of two 25 minute periods. The first meaningful attack saw Glenn Murison play the ball in for Bruce Anderson on the right, but Bruce’s effort hit the post. Liam Strachan started a good attacking move which saw a nice interchange between Fraser Wyness and Glenn before the Westdyke defence snuffed out the danger. When the Westdyke striker picked up the ball in midfield and drove forward, Cameron Shore showed him wide and there seemed to be no danger, until he unleashed a terrific left foot shot into the top corner of the net leaving Ross Irvine with no chance. Fraser had a shot from distance that the keeper blocked and he also reacted quickly to parry the follow-up effort from Matty Dick. Glenn was involved in a lot of the midfield action and he had a couple of efforts just off target. Dyce equalised when Fraser advanced up the left wing and fired in a low and hard driven cross that went all the way through to the back post for Bruce to ram the ball home. Seconds after the re-start, the Westdyke striker drove forward on the right channel and lifted the ball into the net to re-establish the lead for his team. This setback stung Dyce into a frantic spell of attacking where Bradley Neish hit the post and Glenn hit the bar from the follow up, but the remaining minutes of the half went by without further scoring. Half-time 1 - 2 The first attack of the second period saw Bradley round the keeper near the bye line, but his effort from the tightest of angles hit the post and went behind. Westdyke doubled the lead when their super striker ran through the middle and was strong enough to hold off two challenges before completing his hat-trick. Dyce were up against it now but refused to panic and rolled up their sleeves. Ben drove forward from the back and fed Glenn but his fierce strike was superbly turned round the post by the excellent Westdyke keeper. The turning point in the match came when the Westdyke striker flashed a shot across the goal which went narrowly past the far post – in the very next attack Fraser ran up the left wing and crossed for Bradley to shoot home with his left foot to cut the deficit. (The match reporter thought this goal had been scored by Bruce – his new “short back and sides” causing the confusion.) The equaliser arrived shortly afterwards when a shot from Bruce in a position wide on the right was saved but Bradley was on hand to squeeze home the rebound. Defending a corner, Cameron played the ball to Bruce who nutmegged a defender before shooting narrowly past. Moments later Bruce fired in a terrific cross which a defender diverted over the bar from close range. Glenn picked up the ball in midfield and for once had space to drive forward, but his shot went just wide. Just when it looked as if another goal wouldn’t arrive, Glenn passed to Bruce who cut in onto his left and fired home. Dyce were piling forward now – Cameron played a ball over the top for Matty to chase and he drew another great save from the keeper. Breaking up a Westdyke attack, Liam passed to Glenn who drove up the right wing and crossed for Fraser to score at the front post with his RIGHT foot! The final goal arrived when a Dyce corner resulted in a good old stramash in the box, before Bradley rammed the loose ball into the net to complete his hat-trick. Full-time 3 - 6 After a sluggish start, the boys managed to get a foothold on the game and eventually came out on top, though they were pushed all the way by a very good Westdyke team.
