Banchory BC 3 - 6 Dyce BC Sunday 5th October 2008 Banchory Great Northern Trophies League A Dyce travelled out to Royal Deeside for this League A encounter against the talented and very competitive Banchory Boys Club team. Considering the heavy rain on Saturday the pitch was in good shape and overhead conditions bright and sunny as both teams eagerly awaited the kick off. Banchory started brightly winning strong early challenges in midfield forcing Dyce onto the back foot and three left sided corners were quickly conceded by the away team. The Dyce defence managed to deal with the corners although Daniel Tootill had to make a sharp save low down to keep out a near post header. The away team were finding it difficult to get over the half way line but in a fast break away almost scored the first goal when Craig MacAskill shot just wide of the far post after a good through ball from Drew Copeland. Dyce had a good five minute spell with Thomas Robertson shooting wide of the right post from a free kick twenty five yards out. Ross Cochrane and Calum Wilson combined on the right to win two corners that were easily cleared by the home defence. Banchory were still competing strongly and Dyce were finding it difficult to get a hold of the ball and play their usual passing game. From a dangerous right sided corner by the home team Kenny Mair made a brilliant defensive header to clear an almost certain goal. Dyce were giving away silly free kicks in dangerous areas and Thomas Robertson also had to powerfully head clear from ten yards to keep out the home team. Nathan Greig was having a great game for Dyce and managed to clear a net bound shot after the central defenders were caught out of position. Calum Wilson had a good chance from a right sided corner by Craig MacAskill but unfortunately headed over from six yards. At last and probably against the run of play the first goal for Dyce scored by Craig MacAskill with a firm shot from fifteen yards after a good through pass from Nathan Greig. The away team gained in confidence and five minutes later Drew Copeland scored goal number two with a high shot into the top corner from the edge of the box after good triangular passing in midfield. Banchory would feel very unlucky to be two goals behind considering their spirited and high energy performance so far, but suddenly the home team were back in the game when Dyce failed to clear in defence allowing the striker to score with a neat lob over Daniel Tootill's head. Half Time Banchory 1 Dyce 2 During the half time team talk Dyce were reminded of the importance of competing for the ball as no skillful passing and movement can be achieved without the ball. One change was made and Dyce came out for the second half determined to do better and win the match. The away team started the second half brightly with Robbie Collinson having a good left sided run and cross that caught Drew Copeland just offside. Banchory were still very much in the game and Daniel Tootill had to move swiftly to save a low shot from the tall striker. Dyce were starting to win more balls in midfield and forced two right sided corners that were scrambled clear by the home defence. Thomas Robertson was unlucky not to score, hitting the post from fifteen yards after a great run and cross from the right by Calum Wilson and minutes later Thomas headed just over from a deep right sided cross by Craig MacAskill. Dyce were now on top and the all important goal number three was scored by Craig MacAskill with a chip shot from fifteen yards after an excellent through ball from Ross Cochrane. Craig was unlucky not to score again shooting over from ten yards after good play on the right involving Grant Thomson, Thomas Robertson and Calum Wilson. Banchory were still dangerous but playing more on the break in the second half and the big home striker had a fast attack that was just cleared by a combination of Austen Morley, Stuart Close and Daniel Tootill. Dyce would need a fourth goal to make the game safe and two minutes later Craig MacAskill scored again to earn his hat trick with another chip over the goalkeeper's head from twenty yards. The away team were now passing the ball with more authority and confidence, stretching Banchory down both sides and Jack Goodwin had a great run and cross to set up goal number five, scored by Thomas Robertson from close in. Banchory continued to work hard and Paul Noble had to sprint off his line to clear a dangerous through ball in the inside right position and a cracking free kick from thirty five yards by the impressive number six flashed over Paul's head and just missed the target. Banchory would not be denied and scored a second goal from ten yards in the inside left position after the Dyce defence failed to clear a cross. The away team were stung into action again and a good run by Kenny Mair set up a half chance for Cameron Buchan but the home keeper made a good save. Robbie Collinson scored goal number six for Dyce with a low cross shot from ten yards into the far corner after another great run and cross from the right by Jack Goodwin. Banchory scored again in the last minute when a dangerous right wing cross was not cleared by two or three Dyce defenders allowing the home striker an easy score from five yards past an irate Paul Noble. The game ended with Dyce winning well enough in the end, but losing two late goals was not in the script. Well played boys! A battling performance against a very decent, hard working Banchory team.
