Colony Park  2 - 5   Dyce BC

Sunday 7th September 2008

Davidson Park

Great Northern Trophies League A

Dyce 15’s made the journey to Davidson Park for their opening game of this season’s campaign to face a Colony side coming off the back of two straight defeats and no goals scored.

The weather was dry and mild as the game kicked off. Ideal conditions for football.

Both teams struggled to get any sort of rhythm going early doors, with the lack of match sharpness apparent in Dyce’s play. Slowly the Dyce lads settled into the game and the first chance of the game fell to Conner Legge after a good run and cutback from Liam Smith. However the ball bobbled just as Connor was about to pull the trigger from six yards, which caused him to knock it past the keeper's left hand post when it looked easier to score. Connor's despair was short lived as 5 minutes later he unleashed an unstoppable 25 yard shot into the top corner to give Dyce a deserved 1-0 lead.

As the game restarted Colony came more and more into the game, and got an equaliser after 25 minutes of play. A free kick was flighted in from Dyce’s left hand side, and with no Dyce player taking responsibility to go and meet the ball, Colony’s forward rose unchallenged from 6 yards to nod past Scott Fuerst.

Colony took heart from their first goal of the season and added another to take the lead 5 minutes later when Dyce allowed the Colony midfield to feed the striker who fired a superb shot past Fuerst from 15 yards.

This acted as a wake up call to the Dyce side and they started to use the width of Davidson Park to their advantage with Andy Smith making great runs down the left side. It was from one of these runs that Andy forced a corner from which Dyce got the deserved equaliser. Lewis Kidd flighted the corner in from the left which found its way to Liam McCall who forced it home for an important debut goal.

Half Time 2-2

Lewis Kidd made way for Ryan Burr at the start of the second half on the right hand side of midfield.

After a very scrappy first half Dyce took the game by the scruff of the neck and upped there work rate movement and urgency to force Colony onto the back foot right from kick off. The work rate and tenacity of the Dyce central midfield paid off as Gary Grant won the ball and fed in Ryan Burr who found Liam Smith wide right. His cross was superbly volleyed home by Andy Smith at the back post to give Dyce the lead.

The Dyce side was now in full flow with Russell Masson superbly marshalling the defence, Peter Melvin attacking and winning every ball and both full backs, Calum Tremaine and Ross Beattie, providing great cover and overlapping at every opportunity.

Dyce scored again to make it 4-2 after a superb cross from Ryan Burr was headed home by Connor Legge.

The short sharp interchanging passing down the flanks from the Dyce players was superb but they took route one to score the winning goal as Conner Legge superbly controlled a long through ball to calmly slot the ball past the despairing dive of the Colony keeper for a brilliant hat-trick.

Mid way through the second half, Calum and Andy deserved a rest after all their efforts and were replaced by Fraser Burrows and Martyn Fraser.

There was, however, one last scare for the impressive Dyce side. A Colony forward broke down the Dyce right flank with Fraser in close attendance. Fraser had performed his job well by forcing the forward away from goal but spoiled his good work by putting in a rash challenge which felled the forward. The referee had no option but to award Colony a spot kick. Fraser’s blushes were saved when the Scott Fuerst capped an impressive debut by blocking the spot kick to preserve Dyce’s lead.

With 10 minutes remaining Levi Keilman was handed his Dyce debut when he replaced Peter Melvin at the centre of the Dyce defence.

The game came to a close with Dyce failing to turn their superior play into goals.

Full Time Colony Park 2 – Dyce 5

After a shaky start which we put down to match inactivity, the lads really knuckled down and started using the width and playing to our strengths. At times in the second half, when we started playing the ball to feet, the football played was excellent.

A great second half display by the squad was capped by an outstanding hat-trick from Connor. All in all there are plenty of positives to be taken from the performance, and it was great to see the lads back in action, at last!!
