Dyce BC 2 - 0 Albion BC Sunday 9th November 2008 Potterton Great Northern Trophies League A A heavy pitch and blustery conditions welcomed both sets of players for this important league encounter. With Albion undefeated and Dyce having dropped 3 precious points, the scene was set for a classic league encounter between the old rivals. The match started with Albion having the advantage of a strong wind at their backs and they were quickly on the attack, with a hopeful long range effort which caused Scott Fuerst in the Dyce goal no problems at all. Albion continued to press and forced a couple of corners in quick succession, which were easily dealt with by the Dyce defence. An injury to Michael Williamson at left back forced Dyce into their first substitution of the game, with Captain Gary Grant slipping into the left back roll and Peter Melvin making his first start for over 7 weeks, due to injury, taking up a central midfield roll. And it was in midfield that former Albion player Liam McCall was dominating, winning a succession of headers and well timed tackles. The Dyce defence were in no mood to give anything away, with Levi Kelman typifying the Dyce team’s commitment with a brilliant tackle and block on the edge of his box. With 10 minutes of the half left Dyce were starting to dominate play and their first real chance saw Conner burst through the Albion defence, but one touch too much allowed the Albion keeper the chance to save. Then a burst down the left hand side saw Andy Smith clash with the full back and fall awkwardly on his left arm, causing him to be replaced on the left by Martyn Fraser. The Dyce lads were growing in confidence as the half came to a close and took the lead with virtually the last touch of the ball. A great move involving Peter Melvin and Callum Tremain released Ryan Burr down the right whose great deep cross found Liam Smith at the back post to head, yes I said HEAD, the ball home. Half Time 1 - 0 After a great disciplined first half performance, the onus was on Dyce to keep up the impressive work rate and commitment. And they did not disappoint. Albion brought on fresh legs at the start of the second half in an attempt to force the equaliser but the Dyce rear guard were standing firm. And it was Dyce who almost doubled their lead when Conner Legge unleashed a 30 yard rocket from a free kick which cannoned off the underside of the bar, with no Dyce player following in to take advantage. Albion were still looking dangerous and it took a brilliant tackle from Gary Grant to stop a clear shot on the Dyce goal. Dyce then took the game by the scruff of the neck and Connor showed the Albion defence a clean pair of heels to advance and slot the ball past the Albion keeper to fire the second goal for Dyce. Dyce then brought on Lewis Kidd for the injured Liam Smith, and he almost made an immediate impact by curling a shot towards the top left hand corner of Albion's goal, only to see the keeper save and hold his effort. It was virtually one way traffic with the impressive Albion keeper pulling of further saves from Connor, Callum and Liam McCall. There was however one last fright for Dyce, when, for the only occasion in the game, they were caught ball watching and allowed the Albion forward a one v one with Scott Fuerst. The Dyce keeper did brilliantly by staying big and forcing a great blocking save from the Albion player. Dyce almost found a third goal at the final whistle, when only a fantastic diving save from the Albion keeper kept out a 25 yard pile driver from Gary Grant. Full Time: Dyce BC 2 Albion BC 0 Well done to the Dyce squad for a well deserved victory. Every single player had a part to play, in a great team performance against a good side and in tough conditions. We can only say that the coaches are delighted and very proud of the commitment and effort shown by every player. Steve and Dave |
