Great Northern Trophies - League A

Dyce travelled out Buchan way to the picturesque village of Maud for this difficult opening day league fixture against the highly talented and very competitive local Boys Club team. The weather conditions and playing surface were excellent and bright sunshine greeted both sets of players as they went about their warm up drills.

Dyce were dealt a pre match blow as both Rhys Leiper and Jack Smith failed fitness tests, forcing trialist goalkeeper Ewen MacDonald to make his debut with Jack just fit enough to make the Substitutes bench. Dyce started brightly and forced a couple of early right wing corners and from the second one taken by Clark Henderson, Andrew Hampton had a good header scrambled clear by the home defence. Andrew had another half chance but shot over from the edge of the box as Dyce pushed forward strongly looking for the all important first goal.

Maud had a couple of free kicks from just over the half way line that failed to trouble the Dyce defence with debutant keeper Ewen MacDonald looking quite impressive. Felipe Da Silva appeared in the mood and made a great run in from the right side and his cross shot was narrowly missed by Liam Paterson at the far post. Dyce were on top, playing some neat triangular football in midfield but the home defence were proving difficult to break down with lots of players behind the ball.

Bruce Patterson, Ben Allan and Clark Henderson were getting through a power of work in centre midfield and Liam Paterson was linking well with Duncan Wallace but the final ball was just a little off and Maud were quite dangerous on the break. Another great run on the right by Felipe Da Silva almost played in Liam Paterson but he was out muscled by two home defenders and the chance was lost.

Ben Allan hit the right sided upright with a fierce shot from twenty five yards as Dyce got closer and closer to opening the scoring. Dyce had a seemingly good goal disallowed for offside when Ben Allan smashed home from five yards after a Clark Henderson free kick hit the cross bar. A rather strange decision by the Referee which was strongly disputed by the Dyce Management Team. Conner Thomson, Craig Simpson and Josh Milne were looking solid in defence but Dyce were caught out in a quick breakaway attack but keeper Ewen MacDonald saved the day by blocking the home strikers shot from close in.

DANNY CATOR replaced the hard working Duncan Wallace and made an immediate impact by scoring the all important first goal, flicking a shot over his head from ten yards into the far corner of the net after another long throw from Ben Allan. Just before half time, Clark Henderson sustained a back injury and was replaced by Ewan Ritchie and in the last significant action of the half, Craig Simpson crashed in a superb shot from twenty five yards but the impressive home keeper made a great save, finger tipping over for a corner.

Half Time: Maud PBC 0 Dyce 1

Dyce made one change for the start of the second period with Jack Smith replacing the hard working Liam Paterson. The next goal would be vitally important to the outcome of the match and Dyce were determined to build on the good first half show.

Bruce Patterson had a good run and cross from the left side but there were no Dyce takers and the ball went harmlessly behind for a goal kick. Maud were competing strongly and their tall number sixteen had a good cross shot from twenty yards that narrowly missed the far post and suddenly just as the home team were coming more into the game, Dyce scored the vital second goal. DANNY CATOR was the hero again, rounding the keeper and slotting home from close in after a neat through pass from Ewan Ritchie.

Jack Smith was looking lively on the left side and Conner Thomson was making some solid clearances as the home team pushed forward at every opportunity in an effort to get back in the game. Liam Paterson replaced Josh Milne and the home team had a good five minute spell but Dyce keeper Ewen MacDonald made two sharp saves to keep his goal intact. Craig Simpson took a heavy challenge and had to leave the field of play with a painful hamstring injury.

The eager Mitchell Smith entered the arena and influenced the game right away with a strong thirty yard run on the right side and a couple of powerful tackles. Dyce continued to pass the ball well but the home defence were proving very difficult to breach again with the keeper looking inspired and making great saves to keep out fine efforts from Jack Smith, Danny Cator and Felipe Da Silva.

Lee Milne replaced the hard working Ben Allan as Dyce continued to push forward looking for the killer third goal. Ewen MacDonald made a terrific point blank save to keep out a net bound header from a home right wing corner and some brilliant last ditch defending by Liam Paterson prevented a Maud score. Lee Milne linked well with Felipe Da Silva, Ewan Ritchie and Mitchell Smith and played over a couple of superb early balls from the right side that should have produced goals but the Maud keeper refused to be beaten again and made two superb saves. The game ended with Dyce winning 2-0 to earn a hard fought three points against a very decent Maud PBC team.

Final Score: Maud PBC 0 Dyce 2

Well played boys, a good start to the season with an excellent performance at a very difficult away venue.
