And so after the hard slog of the previous rounds Dyce had made it to the final. Setting off early in a very plush bus the lads were in fine spirit, looking and sounding relaxed but very focused on the match ahead. Arriving at the stadium to be shown in there was a fastidious official asking the lads to wait before entering. A comment from the players summed up their mood – “Aye its ok we ken fit wir deing. Wiv been here afore!”
After the usual rigmarole of the official party introductions the match was under way on what was an excellent 4th generation artificial surface. Neither team looked fazed by the big occasion and settled fairly quickly. Hutchy were the first to have a chance with a free kick on the right. It was flicked on in the box but Danny was equal to the task and rose to take an easy catch. On the big pitch width in the play was going to be important and Robbie emphasised this with a lovely ball to Calum down the left wing. Calum was strong and worked his way into the box to unleashing a shot that went wide of the far post. It was Hutchy who were to take the lead in the match, a hopeful ball down the right of the Dyce defence was not dealt with and this allowed the Hutchy player to nip in from the left line, jink inside before curling a beauty of a shot into the far post leaving Danny helpless. 7 mins 0-1. Dyce did not let their heads go down after this early setback and battled well to win every ball. Calum up front was chasing everything with excellent energy and strength. The midfield battle ebbed and flowed between the teams with Dyce edging the majority of possession. Dyce struggled to find the cutting ball that would give them a clear chance until a bit of good football and some magical play lit the game up. Ross took the ball from defence to the half way line and he then played a slick one two with Craig on the right before starting a mazy dribble. It took him past two defenders and into the box where a defender almost made a tackle before pulling out, fearful of giving away a penalty. This allowed ROSS COCHRANE to wait for the keeper to go down before neatly lifting the ball over the keeper at the near post. 17 mins 1-1. Steven had a superb cross filed ball dummied by Calum to Craig but his cross couldn’t get past the keeper. It was from this left side that Dyce got the next opening. Steven again played Calum in but this time down the line. Calum drove to the by line just inside the box before being taken down. Definite penalty to Dyce. SCOTT ANDERSON was the player who shouldered the responsibility to take the spot kick and made no mistake as he slotted it into the right side of the net. 29 mins 2-1. Dyce were finding joy in the wide areas especially down the right with Craig giving the Hutchy left back a torrid time. Hutchy were far from out of this game although their chance were mainly limited to free kicks given away in stupid areas. A free kick from the left caused Dyce some worry when it was met at the near post with a nice flicked header. Fortunately it went through the box and past the far post. Half Time: Dyce 2-1 Hutchison Vale
More of the same was the call at half time from the management team. This started well when Calum found himself in a nice shooting position but his shot was tame by his standards and it was saved. Hutchy pressed for the equaliser and won a couple of corners in a row. The most dangerous of these was sent into the back post and was cleared but straight to a Hutchy player. The defence rushed out and blocked the incoming shot. If Hutchy though it was going to be all them in the second half they were asked to think again when Dyce had a glorious chance to kill the game off. A corner from the right was met at the near post by Ollie who had the faintest of flicks on the ball that sent it goal ward at the back post before being cleared off the line. Ollie was again given a chance to close the game out with another headed chance from a corner, this time he got too much of the ball and it went over. Hutchy were now looking to catch Dyce on the break, the defence stood solid until disaster struck. The ball was not cleared on the right of defence. This allowed Hutchy to dribble into the box to look for a shot. Before he could his shot away a leg was stuck out and down he went, a clear penalty. The Hutchy player dispatched the ball down the right of the goal with Danny diving the opposite direction. 68 mins 2-2. After the game was re-started it was in the next Dyce attack they were to regain the lead. A hopeful ball was launched into the left corner with Calum giving chase. His strength, speed and persistence won him the ball. He cut down the goal line before cutting inside to let his shot go. The stinging shot was parried by the keeper out into the left of the box. There, running in, was OLLIE MACKINTOSH to keep his head and knock the ball goal bound. It may have taken a deflection but was going in any way. 71 mins 3-2. The closing nine minutes were end-to-end stuff with Dyce keeping possession well and getting to the corners when they had the ball. Stuart had the only clear chance from a free kick but could only head wide. There was a brief scare when Danny spilled a cross but he had his wits about him to recover well. Even when the four indicated minutes were played the game was going on for a further two. Dyce were dominant in the defending and it was when defending the final whistle sounded to jubilant cheers and celebrations from the players management teams and the very vocal Dyce support. Full Time: Dyce 3-2 Hutchison Vale
A tremendous achievement for the lads to win the cup for the third year on the trot. Today game was the culmination of some very hard work through what must have been the hardest draw of any team in this years Scottish Cup. In every game the whole squad has worked extremely hard for each other and today was no different, everyone giving their absolute all. Lads give yourselves a very, very well deserved pat on the back. COME ON YOU DYCE!!!!!!!
