Colony Park  1 - 13 Dyce BC

Sunday 27th January 2008

Port Elphinstone

As we kick off our first game of 2008 we are still missing Euan Johnston. Euan who picked up an injury on 21st November last year, came back to training but didn't manage to finish the session and it will be a few more weeks before he will be fit to play.   Colony started brightly and early pressure saw them force Dyce onto the back foot.   Although they won a couple of corners Dyce dealt comfortably with these.  Latching on to a long clearance out of defence, Kieran Mearns played a crossfield ball to Ewan McGregor who slipped the ball inside to the on-rushing Craig Gill who rifled a 20 yard rocket into the top corner of the net giving the Colony keeper no chance.

Cameron Duncan played the ball out wide right to Gavin Ritchie and when the keeper could only parry his fierce shot Ewan McGregor was first to react to the loose ball and he fired across the keeper into the net.   A good attack by Colony down the right hand side saw Calum Wilson in goals look lively and make a good save to keep his goal intact.  Winning the ball out on the right, Gavin Ritchie slipped the ball inside to Cameron Duncan who laid a pinpoint pass through the centre to Kieran Mearns who drew the keeper and coolly slotted past him into the net.

Winning a strong challenge in his own half, Cory Ritchie played the ball out wide right to Kieran Mearns who beat a couple of players and fired a fierce cross into the box but their were no Dyce takers.   A promising Colony attack ended when a cross was overhit to the back post and it ran out of play for a throw-in to Dyce.  Winning a challenge, Craig Gill drove forward beating a couple of players before slipping the ball through to Kieran Mearns whose 15 yard shot drew a good save out of the Colony keeper.

After a good run up the right hand side, Gavin Ritchie crossed into the box and when ball broke off Ewan McGregor, Cameron Duncan was unlucky to see his left foot shot go narrowly past the post.  Ewan McGregor dispossessed a Colony player on the left and played a good one-two with Kieran Mearns before playing in a pass which saw Kieran drive in on goals and drive home goal number four.  This stung Colony into action and Calum Wilson was relieved when a 20 yard shot beat him but rebounded into play off the crossbar.  From the loose ball there was a scramble in the Dyce box but Calum made a good save diving to his left.  Intercepting a Colony pass, Craig Gill beat three Colony players before blasting a left foot shot which bulged the Colony net.

First Period:  0  -  5

The first five minutes of the second period were even with neither side creating any clear cut chances.  Cameron McArthur won the ball in midfield, drove in on goals but his shot was well saved by the Colony keeper.  Calum Wilson in goals for Dyce comfortably saved a Colony Park free kick.   Alex Hampton took a corner on the right and Ross Craigen was first to react but his shot went over the bar.   A good run up the left by Ewan McGregor saw him play the ball into the box but the Colony defence eventually cleared.  A long clearance by Cory Ritchie saw Ross Craigen show good control, drive in on goals but once again the Colony keeper saved well.

Taking a throw-in from the left Ewan McGregor played the ball to Cameron McArthur who squared the ball to Alex Hampton who blasted home past the keeper from the edge of the box.  Alex Hampton showed good awareness taking a quick throw-in on the right which Ross Craigen got on the end of and prodded home from close range.  A defence splitting through ball by Cameron McArthur saw Ross Craigen through on goals and although the keeper saved his first shot it landed back to him and when the keeper could only parry his second shot the ball landed at the feet of Cameron McArthur who made no mistake firing home with his left foot from close range.

When the ball broke from a midfield scramble Alex Hampton was first to the loose ball and he rifled a great 20 yard effort low into the corner of the net.  A quick Colony breakaway up the right hand side of the park saw the ball played into the box but Reigan Thomson was on hand to block a certain Colony goal and eventually clear the ball for a corner which came to nothing.  Colony Park were awarded a freekick on the left hand edge of the box and blasted a great shot high into the Dyce net giving keeper Calum Wilson no chance.

Winning a strong challenge in defence, Reigan Thomson played a ball over the top of the Colony defence to the pacey Ross Craigen who outstripped the home defence and fired home goal number ten.

Second Period:  1  -  10

Reigan Thomson won a tackle and drove up the right hand side beating a couple of players but his cross was cleared after a scramble in the Colony penalty box.    Cameron Duncan beat a couple of players on the left hand side before squaring to Ross Craigen who made no mistake netting his hat-trick.  Cameron Duncan beat a couple of players on the left, cut inside onto his right foot and was unlucky to see his shot  beat the keeper but come back into play off the crossbar.

Craig Gill won the ball at the back, beat a couple of players up the left hand side and crossed into the box.   His cross was met on the volley by Cameron McArthur and although the keeper saved, Ross Craigen netted the rebound from close in.  A good passing move involving Cameron McArthur, Gavin Ritchie and Cameron Duncan saw the ball played through to Kieran Mearns who brought out a great save from the Colony stopper.

Craig Gill passed the ball up the right hand side to Kieran Mearns whose cross was controlled in the box by Cameron Duncan and laid back to Ewan McGregor.  Ewan's shot was blocked by the Colony defence but landed kindly for Gavin Ritchie who scored from close range.

Considering this was the first game the boys had played since
Saturday, 8th December their performance was first class.
Their passing, sharpness and eye for goal made it hard to believe
they hadn't played for so long.
Well done boys.
